In Astride, McGraw brings to life the remarkable women who rode, trained, bred, raced, and worked with horses in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, using their partnership with horses to claim greater freedom, authority, and visibility in American life. Richly illustrated with period photographs, the book reveals how these trailblazers challenged social norms and helped shape lasting cultural change.
