An Exploration of Landscape and History

Date

May 02 2026

Time

9:00 am - 4:30 pm

The Oak Spring landscape holds a rich natural and cultural history visible in its trees, stone walls, and shifting patterns of forest and field. This one‑day program begins with tree identification and uses the landscape to explore both its ecological story and the Mellon family’s influence. Participants will walk about four miles across hilly, uneven terrain while learning how history and ecology shape Oak Spring and Rokeby.

This program is open to anyone interested in understanding the landscape more deeply. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and be prepared for several hours outdoors. Binoculars and cameras are welcome.

The event takes place on the Little Oak Spring portion of OSGF and does not include a tour of the formal garden or main residence. Google Maps is recommended for directions.

A boxed lunch is included, with a choice of turkey or a gluten‑free vegan option. Additional dietary needs cannot be accommodated; guests with restrictions should bring their own meal.
