Entombed in Mystery: The Hidden Sculpture at Oak Spring

Date

Jun 01 2025

Time

2:00 am - 5:00 pm

Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, plans were made to grace the official Kennedy gravesite with a metal wreath designed by Tiffany jeweler Jean Schlumberger and cast by sculptor Louis Féron. Adorned with the hats donned by servicemen and left at the grave in respect, this sculpture forever enshrines JFK’s service in World War II, his love of nature, and his aspiration for a hopeful future. The wreath, however, never made it to Arlington National Cemetery, and had been thought to be lost to history.

Join VPHA, Elinor Crane, and Oak Spring Garden Foundation President Sir Peter Crane in an exploration of how this missing wreath was found at Oak Spring. Enjoy an exploration of the grounds, see an exhibit on the creation of the gravesite of our 35th president. Enjoy an exclusive opportunity to tour Bunny Mellon’s celebrated Oak Spring Garden Library and learn about its support for current and future exhibits around the world, including the “Intrepid Audubon” exhibit currently at the National Sporting Library and Museum in Middleburg.

Following the program, a reception will take place at the Broodmare Barn.
