Middleburg’s Weekend Guide: Memorial Day Edition

— Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember those who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice for our country to protect our freedoms. As we say thank you to our veterans, it’s also a time to celebrate the beginning of summer with delicious food, live music and family-friendly entertainment. Here’s what’s happening in Middleburg this weekend:

Memorial Day Weekend at Three Fox Vineyards: May 26-29

Break out the Spectators and summer clothes! Expect a fabulous start to the summer season this Memorial Day weekend at Three Fox Vineyards. Bring your picnic, your family or friends and have a ball. Play bocce or corn-hole. Check out our picnic meadow and hammocks or stroll our woodland trails or the banks of Crooked Run. On Saturday, Pamela Anderson will be here with her Stella & Dot jewelry and the Exaggerations will be playing live music from 1:30-4:30 p.m.! On Sunday, enjoy live music by Movin’ On from 1:30-4:30 p.m. and Carly Prow, an independent consultant for Rodan & Fields skincare will be here! On Monday, Richard Giersch will be playing hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s from 1:30-4:30 p.m.! Talk of the Mountain Seafood will have their famous half-pound jumbo lump crab cake and homemade potato for sale on Saturday, Sunday and Monday!

National Sporting Library and Museum Middleburg VA Open LateOpen Late at the National Sporting Library & Museum: May 26 | 6-8 p.m.

Please bring your chairs and join us for great music, family fun, and food from Hammerdown BBQ on the National Sporting Library & Museum Lawn. Concerts and Museum admission are free and open to the public 6-8 p.m. Picnics are welcome but no glass containers or outside alcohol is permitted. Cash bar featuring wine from Greenhill Winery & Vineyards and beer.

Artist Andre Pater will join us for the concert, where he will be signing catalogues and prints.

Middleburg Community Center VAMiddleburg Community Center’s Public Pool Opening Weekend: May 27-29 | 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

The Middleburg Community Center pool opens Memorial Day weekend! It will remain open on weekends through June 10, then will be open daily from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. throughout the summer. Daily pool fees are $5 for each adult or child ages 5+ (children under 5 are $2.50 each). Seasonal passes and pool passes are also available.

Andre Pater Talk: The Iroquois Hunt and Hound Paintings at the National Sporting Library & Museum: May 27 | 2-2:30 p.m.

Andre returns to give guests a guided tour and share his inspiration for creating many of the pieces included in the exhibition “Andre Pater: In a Sporting Light,” specifically those focusing on the Iroquois Hunt Club. Sugar is in the air as local berry season is in full swing! Learn how to create your own delicious fruit desserts just in time for your Memorial Day get-togethers or picnics.

“Heroes & Underdogs” Lecture at the National Sporting Library & Museum: May 27 | 3:30-5 p.m.

Join us in celebrating the unsung heroes of the sporting world! Each Heroes & Underdogs lecture reveals the challenges and triumphs of those who struggled against adversity, overcame great odds, and won our hearts with their passion and determination. Includes 30 minute reception with 1 hour lecture to follow.

Saturday’s talk features Lilla Mason, MFH Iroquois Hunt, speaking on the Iroquois Hunt Club’s Hound Retirement Fund.

June 27: Mark Metzger, Carp Anglers Group, on the much maligned sport of carp fishing in the United States

Kate Powell of Wild Sacred Journey will be conducting a yoga workshop at Three Fox from 10:45-11:45 a.m. Start your day off with a grounding and relaxing all-levels yoga class in the meadow, on the edge of a bubbling stream. Memorial Day Bourbon, Bocce & BBQ at Salamander Resort & Spa: May 28 | Noon-7 p.m.

You are invited to join us in honoring those who have fought for our freedom this Memorial Day. Salamander will be celebrating with families on the Grand Lawn and enjoying specialty-crafted bourbon cocktails from Woodford Reserve. Come participate in a friendly yet still competitive game of bocce ball and fill up on some delicious, get all over your face, BBQ.

Summer never sounded so good! This summer, Salamander is introducing “Sounds of Salamander” every Sunday on their outdoor terrace at Gold Cup Wine Bar. Feast on their new al fresco menu, delicious desserts and seasonal beverages while enjoying sensational views of the Virginia countryside and taking in the sounds of an acoustic guitar on their terrace.

This weekly event is the place to be and be seen every Sunday this summer! Music stylings will be provided by the David Mininberg Duo.

Treat your dog and yourself to Salamander’s weekly Yappy Hour! Watch as your pooch tests their skills in the obstacle course, while you indulge in a special menu from Gold Cup Wine Bar featuring Sharing Chow including Salamander’s Pimento Cheese “Hush Puppies” and a refreshing Pup-tail Menu with their Spicy Pup-arita with Blanco tequila. A portion of the proceeds are donated to the Middleburg Humane Foundation.

Gallery Talk at the National Sporting Library & Museum: May 31 | 2-2:30 p.m.

Each week, NSLM’s Clarice & Robert H. Smith educator or museum curators will give attendees a personalized sneak peek at traveling exhibitions, permanent collections, and the fascinating stories behind the works in the museum’s art collections. No two tours are alike, so come back for more! Reservations are not required and admission is free. Bring your friends! Gallery talks are every Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Bring your friends and join us for our Live in the Vines Summer Concert Series! 50 West will have a band and a food truck at the vineyard every Friday night in June. There are no tickets to purchase or cover charge to pay — just show up and enjoy a great evening in Middleburg!

An Evening with James Monroe at Aldie Mill: June 3 | 7 p.m.

Join the Aldie Heritage Association as they welcome Colonel James Monroe back to Aldie, a place he knew well during his years in residence at nearby Oak Hill. Colonel Monroe, in his post presidential years, will look back on his exemplary career, with commentary on his retirement at Oak Hill and his business interaction with Aldie Mills. $20 per person, including a reception following the program. Mosby Heritage Area AssociationMosby’s Rangers Descendant Reunion at Middleburg Academy: June 10-11

Whether you are a descendant of one of Mosby’s Rangers or not, come to this year’s Descendant Reunion, being held at the Middleburg Academy on June 10-11, 2017. Saturday will feature several speakers and programs, mixed in with lunch and a showing of several episodes of the 1957 television show Gray Ghost, accompanied by the commentary of several Mosby historians. Boxwood Wine Dinner at Market Salamander: June 16 | 6-8 p.m.

Market Salamander has paired with Boxwood to create a tastefully executed wine dinner.

Patio 5 Summer on Toast! at Market Salamander: June 29 | 5-7 p.m.

Featured this month will be pesto! Evening includes live music, plus wine and food tasting. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Under 21 ticket prices are $20 at the door and $15 in advance. Pets are allowed at the market on a leash only. Patio 5 is held on the last Thursday of each month.
