The Byrne Gallery is proud to present “Turning the New Leaf: Cyanotypes in the Modern Age.” This exhibition of new work by Lesley Riley for the month of September explores her groundbreaking combination of the 150-year-old cyanotype process with modern digital method. Lesley blends the classic and contemporary to create unique botanical art.
Please join us for a special reception for the artist on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 5-8 p.m. This event is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend! On Sunday, Sept. 22, from 1-3 p.m., Lesley will give an artist talk about her work and process. The show will open on Sept. 4 and continue through Sept. 29.
Turning a New Leaf is Lesley’s first show at The Byrne Gallery. To create her unique botanical art, Lesley combines the cyanotype process with a little water (wet cyanotype) and leaves gathered from across the world, to create carefully composed original cyanotype prints. Her color palette is expressionistic and is her own — a departure from the colors of the natural world.
These camera-less photographic blueprints become the bones for her subsequent digital artistry, combining layers of pattern and color culled from her own paintings, artwork and photographs. Lesley draws on her innate sense of composition, form and color to present stunning, large — and intimate — visions of enhanced natural beauty that transcend expectations.
Lesley Riley is an internationally known artist, instructor and author of several books. Her works have appeared in many publications in the United States and abroad. She teaches workshops in the United States and in Europe. She is a former contributing editor of Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine and host of BlogTalk Radio’s “Art & Soul” podcast.
Don’t miss this splendid exhibit!
