The Byrne Gallery is proud to present “Endless Summer,” a celebration of summer at its best! This 6-week exhibition for the months of July and August features the newest paintings by Gerald Hennsey and Lida Matheson Stifel. The exhibit offers viewers a taste of the seaside as well as the countryside — both wonderful ways to experience the joy of blue skies and warm weather. Gerald Hennesy’s powerful wave paintings and quiet dune scapes will make you long for the seaside while sunny landscapes with red barns and classic Virginia farmhouses will thrill you with the feeling of a perfect summer day! Lida Matheson Stifel’s sunflowers and flower-covered garden gates will bring you to a happy peaceful retreat from the bustle of the city. Come join us for this lovely exhibition which will begin on July 5 and continue through Sunday, Aug. 18. A special reception for the artists on Friday, July 12, from 4-7 p.m. is open to the public and everyone is cordially invited to attend.
Hennesy is a master painter known throughout Virginia and the coastal waters of the eastern seaboard. His paintings of the Atlantic ocean are some of the finest you will ever see. His painterly impressions of the sea at dawn will thrill you with the majesty of this powerful body of water. He paints primarily in oil in an impressionistic style, working both in plein-air and in his studio. It is important that a subject chosen for a painting be exciting to him, so it will then also be exciting and interesting to the viewers of his completed piece. Once a scene has been selected and the composition sketched in, Hennesy paints rather rapidly, while attempting to achieve a freshness of color and expressiveness in his brushwork. He is particularly concerned with depicting the effect of light on his landscape and seascape subjects.
His work has been exhibited widely in commercial and museum galleries including the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Georgia Museum of Art, The Corcoran Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Museum. His paintings are in numerous private, corporate and public collections, including the U. S. House of Representatives, the State Department, the Maryland State Mansion, the DAR headquarters and the American Legion headquarters. He is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Art.
Lida Matheson Stifel
Lida Matheson Stifel has roots in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland, where she lives on a small farm. An active painter for over 40 years, she is inspired by her intimate environment and the beauty she sees around her every day — the garden, the barn and the sheep that she and her husband raise are all an integral part of her work. “My paintings are generated by my response to nature. Always working from life allows me to achieve a sense of immediacy. I am drawn to the gesture of a thing, place or person and try to capture that fresh spirit in my work.”
Her work has been shown in galleries from Pennsylvania to Florida and is in numerous private and public collections throughout the country. Her work was featured in International Contemporary Masters as well as in an article in Plein Air magazine, with whom she travelled to Africa last year. She is a member of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters and Oil Painters of America.
